Mechanical Engineer

IRRI’s Biogas and renewable energy project, Sistema Biobolsa, is looking for a Mechanical Engineer student to work with our biogas researchers to develop equipment, components and products for the farms that use biogas as a source of energy to run farm equipment including pumps, water heaters, pasteurizers etc. The first phase is to visit farms that are already using IRRI biodigesters and work in cooperation with the landowners to identify opportunities to decrease the monthly expenses through the usage of biogas-fired equipment, components and products.  Priority components include: electric generators, pasteurizers, refrigeration and pumps.  The first phase will culminate with a report that will include a series of recommendations for discussion with the team.  Based on the successful completion of phase one, the intern will then design and build a prototype for testing in the field.

  • Mechanical Engineer
  • High level of Spanish, both speaking and writing
  • Creativity and ability to work independently

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop new equipment for farms that use digesters and biogas as a source of energy.
  • Talking to Sistema Biobolsa users to identify aspects of the system that can be enhanced, and to develop opportunities, challenges and risks.
  • Make a prototype of a new team that will improve the domestic economy of the Sistema Biobolsa users.
  • Testing the prototype in the field and in the laboratory and make changes and modifications based on the results.
  • Prepare a report and guidelines on how to install, use and maintain the equipment with illustrations, text and photos.
