Teaching in Rural Mexico

IRRI Mexico’s newest project, Salva Terra, is an Eco-village, sustainability education center and appropriate technology transfer hub located in the mountains of Veracruz, near the colonial village of Xico. The land is comprised of 220 hectares and is located in a mesophilic cloud forest. We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic intern to teach in a school located in the neighboring village; a marginalized and rural community lacking basic services and infrastructure. This community has access to only one primary school that in recent years has been lacking teachers due to its location in an inaccessible rural mountain community. IRRI Mexico is looking to adopt this school as part of the IRRI-Salva Terra project by, firstly, placing a teacher in the school.

This intern should be highly adaptable, as they will be living in a rustic cabin that is one-hour walk to the nearest road. The intern will live in a cabin on Salva Terra land and will be provided with food, transportation and support.  The school is a 30-minute hike through a cloud forest from the main cabin in the eco-village.  We require a minimum 6-month time commitment for this position because of the sensitive nature of working with young children.  The intern will be allowed to develop his or her own teaching material to augment the required national curriculum.

Desired Skills:

  • Fluency in Spanish, speaking and writing.
  • Education majors will be given preference.
  • Previous experience working with children.
  • Capable of living in a shared cabin in a sustainable community, with limited access to modern facilities

Main Responsibilities:

  • Planning daily activities and classes.
  • Being able to handle classes of around 30 students.
